One exciting event that is happening in Lisbon through July 2017 is a very special touring exhibition called Cosmos Discovery. Portugal is privileged to be the very first country in the world to host what is touted as the world’s largest touring exhibition that features space exploration. This exhibition is slated to go around several countries in the next five years.
Visitors will be able to visit the 2500 m2 display area about the discovery of space. The stories behind each artefact and the real-life heroes who went into outer space will all be shown. Another unique thing about this exhibit is that it features 200 original artefacts both from the United States and the USSR, and other space agencies from around the world.
This exhibition is brought to Lisbon by World Crew Events, headquartered at Aquilino Ribeiro Street, Carnaxide. Come to Lisbon and experience what it was like to be an astronaut who crossed the frontier into outer space. The Cosmos Discovery Exhibition is sub-divided into several galleries that take visitors on a space journey – training for space, lifting off, floating, and living in space. The story of the first human in space, the USSR’s Yuri Gagarin, is especially compelling. One of the main attractions is a model of the Houston Mission control centre.
Visitors will also be able to enter a Space Shuttle cockpit, take a seat, and imagine piloting it. They also get to see what it is like inside a space station and see various objects that astronauts use. Aside from these, displays also feature the development of manned spaceflights, starting from its early days, to missions happening in present time and even a glimpse into the future of space travel.
Some objects that are of interest are a full-size model of NASA’s Mercury spacecraft and the capsule of Enos the chimpanzee. Obtaining all original artefacts from NASA is made possible through collaboration with Cosmosphere, an American space museum and STEM education centre located in Hutchinson, Kansas. Space enthusiasts will surely get excited about the three modules of the Soviet space pod Soyuz, the Soviet satellite Sputnik, and a giant-scale model of the Saturn V rocket which are all on display. There are also fragments of real asteroids which are approximately millions of years old. There is a gallery dedicated to NASA’s Apollo programme, which has the lunar rover used by the American crew to explore the moon. The USSR lunar rover Lunokhod is also on display. Visitors will also see several space suits, from past models to present-day suits.
The Cosmos Discovery Exhibition is held at the Terreiro das Missas by the Fluvial de Belém (alongside the EDP/MAAT Foundation) in Lisbon and is open every day from 10:00 AM to 8:00 PM. Doors close at 8:00 PM, but the exhibit remains open until 9:30 PM to accommodate the last visitors. The exhibit lasts for approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes.
The exhibit is wheelchair-accessible, but baby strollers are not allowed. However, there are available baby carrier slings. Pets, food and other beverages, umbrellas, and helmets are also not allowed inside. Flash-free photography is allowed, as long as the image is for personal use. There is a souvenir shop that sells various items related to space flights.
